Welcome to this extra-special Christmas edition, which is brimming with cross stitch goodies for you to enjoy in the countdown to, well, the most wonderful time of the year! This issue, we ensure you’re on course to stitch yourself a magical Christmas, whether you’re decorating the house, choosing the best gifts for your family or the nicest cards to stitch for friends. If you have children in your family then they’ll love the advent pockets, which you can fill with sweeties and treats, or how about making them a fabulous present sack to hang at the end of their beds on Christmas Eve? They’ll adore the polar pals picture too, which features a polar bear and a penguin having a snuggle – it’s an irresistible stitch! We include heirloom designs you can stitch now and which you and your family will enjoy year after year. The candy express picture is a sweetie-covered train that’ll make a fantastic centrepiece to hang above the mantelpiece or perhaps you’ll choose the elegant ‘joy to the world’ whitework design, which will add a touch of winter chic. With gift ideas for all the family, heaps of gorgeous cards to stitch, an advent calendar and even a seasonal themed clock using The Twelve Days of Christmas as inspiration there are plenty of projects to enjoy. “From Hans Christian Andersen’s original tale to Disney’s Frozen, I’ve always loved the story of The Snow Queen. I think living in an ice palace would get a bit too chilly though, no matter how pretty it might be!” Shannon Wasilieff, designer

How to stitch with metallic threads When threading metallics, if you are using two strands, cut a single length of thread and fold it in half. Feed the looped end through the eye of the needle and then pass over the point to secure the thread in place. This will keep the thread attached to the needle and prevent slipping. Also, use a larger needle than you normally would. The hole in the fabric will be made bigger by the needle and the thread will pass through more easily.

Adding seed beads to the design Durene has scattered French knots liberally over this design, and they are a beautiful feature – but if you’re not a fan of these knotty stitches, you may like to replace them with seed beads to create a similar effect. Try Mill Hill seed beads in white, white opal or snow white.

Finishing touches With their decorative borders, these trendy typography designs don’t need a frame as well, so we stretched the fabric around a piece of canvas and presented the designs on that instead. It looks really contemporary and is easy to do. Just position the design making sure it is central, first pinning and then sewing the fabric securely at the back.

How to attach the seed beads The delicate seed beads used in this design should be added only after all the cross stitch has been worked. Thread your beading needle with two strands of white stranded cotton and secure the thread at the back of your work. Bring the needle up through the fabric, thread on a seed bead, and work the bottom arm of a cross stitch. Then, to make sure the bead is secured firmly, work the top arm of the cross stitch as well, splitting the two strands of thread so that they lie either side of the bead.

How to make a cushion

1

Lay out your fabric neatly and cut two side panels

measuring 32x7.5cm (12½x3in); two top and bottom panels measuring 7.5x40cm (3x15¾in) and two pieces for the envelope opening at the back of the cushion measuring 26x40cm (10¼x15¾in).

2

Cut around the stitched piece so it measures

32x32cm (12½x12½in). With right sides together, lay the left and right panels onto the stitched piece and pin. Stitch in place leaving a 1cm (½in) seam, then press the seams open. Repeat for the top and bottom panels, stitching over the left and right panels.

3

Sew a 1cm (½in) along one long edge of each of the

back pieces. With right sides together, place the back pieces on top of your cushion front, so the raw edges match up and the hemmed panels overlap in the middle. Pin in place and sew all the way around the edges using a 1cm (½in) seam.

4

Turn the cushion through to the right side and press.

Insert a cushion pad inside the envelope opening you have created to finish.

Tip If you’d prefer to stitch on white fabric, work the snowflakes in blue thread so they stand out

How to attach the seed beads Gail has used Victorian gold seed beads for the sparkly star trails, and we love the twinkly effect. To attach each bead, use a special beading needle, which is thinner and longer than a tapestry needle. You’ll need two strands of cotton in a colour that closely matches the bead or the fabric behind it – we’ve used pale blue to blend in with the evenweave background. Attach the bead using a half cross stitch, then work a second half stitch in the other direction, splitting the two strands so that they lie either side of the bead, holding it securely in place.

Stitching close-up When there is only one colour of thread on a background of white, you really need a clean, crisp finish. Fluff left behind on the fabric could spoil the contrasting effect, so check over your work and remove any little bits very carefully with a pair of tweezers.

How to mount your cards

1

Trim your evenweave to within three squares of the

stitching, then fray one row of evenweave all the way around the edge. You can either pull the threads out by hand or by using a pair of tweezers.

2

Cut a piece of white paper slightly smaller than your

evenweave, and stick this to the back of the stitching using double-sided tape.

3 4

Place a few more strips of double-sided tape on the

back of the paper. Position the stitching centrally over the card

blank. Once you are happy with the position, carefully stick the design in place. 98 Ultimate Christmas

5 tips for stitching on perforated paper

Heather Nugent, charting editor

1 2 3 4 5

Perforated paper can tear, so remember

30

20

10

10

20

30

to be gentle and handle it carefully, and

don’t pull your thread too tightly. If perforated paper does tear, patch it up

20

with a second piece of perforated paper

and then work through both layers. Another way to repair a torn piece of perforated paper is to stick strips of clear

10

tape to the back of the tear. Store sheets of perforated paper inside hard-backed envelopes. Perforated paper is great for teaching kids to stitch because it can be trimmed

to a size easy for small hands to hold. 10

Finishing ideas 20

The gold ribbon that has been used to finish off these cards makes them look so special. If you want to add a touch of sparkle to your stitching, add gold blending filament to the needle when working the yellow shades.

Neat stitching It is never advisable to carry threads across the back of your stitching from one area to another, unless the distance is very short. If you do, the back of your work can quickly become a tangled mess of threads. It is especially important not to carry threads across the back of unstitched areas, as these trailing threads could show through at the front, spoiling the look of your work.

How to attach the seed beads Lesley has added a special touch and created texture for these Nativity cards by using Mill Hill seed beads in white. To attach each bead, use a special beading needle, which is thinner and longer than a tapestry needle so it will easily fit through the bead, even when threaded.

Quick and easy motifs to stitch in an evening

How to make a decoration

1

Cut out your stitched piece leaving a 1.5cm (½in) seam allowance all

the way around. We used a circular object as a template for ours.

2 3

Cut a coordinating backing fabric to the same size, using your cut-out

stitched piece as a template. Fold your ribbon or cord in half to create a loop. Pin the ends of your

cord at the top of the stitched piece, making sure the loop lies downwards.

4

Pin together front and back pieces with right sides facing and the loop

tucked inside. Machine- or hand-stitch with a 1cm (¼in) seam allowance, leaving a small gap at the bottom. Turn through and press.

5

Fill your decoration firmly with wadding, then slip stitch the gap

closed for a neat finish.

Beginner’s guide

How to…

With technical editor, Fiona Baker

All the guidance you need for cross stitch success!

Quick-start cross stitch Choose your project… Make sure you choose the right level for you – you’ll find this information in the Factbox on each of our projects. Absolute beginners should choose a design without fractional stitches.

Buy your materials… The You Will Need list on each project will tell you what size and type of fabric you need, and also which needle to use (see the table below for more information on needle sizes). You’ll find details of the threads you need in the key.

Your materials

Get ready… We recommend always starting from the middle of the design. Follow the two heavy ‘0’ gridlines on the chart and find a symbol near the centre. Look for this symbol on the key for the colour of thread you need, plus the number of strands. Thread your needle with this colour.

With just a few essentials, you’ll be all set to stitch straightaway…

Fabrics You’ll need either aida or evenweave for your design:

Get set…

Aida

Threads

Great for: Beginners, as it has regular woven blocks and obvious holes. Aida is stiffer than evenweave so keeps its shape better. 14-count is the most common. Bad for: Fractional stitches. If you stitch a design with fractional stitches on aida, you’ll have to make an extra hole in the fabric, using a sharp needle.

Stranded cotton

Evenweave Great for: Fractional stitches and a neat finish. This fabric is softer than aida, with a finer weave and more threads per inch – 28-count is the most common. On evenweave, you work a cross stitch over two threads of the fabric, so you have a central hole spare for your fractional stitches. Bad for: Beginners. It’s best to start on aida and work up to evenweave when you’re confident.

This coloured thread comes in 8m skeins and can be divided into six strands. Usually, you use two strands together for cross stitch, and one strand on its own for backstitch. There are three main brands of stranded cotton – DMC, Anchor and Madeira – all of which are smooth and easy to stitch with, and also colourfast to 95°C. Cheaper brands are available, but these will be less durable and may not be colourfast.

Fold your fabric in half horizontally and vertically to find the centre of that as well. The folds will make a cross, which corresponds to the cross at the centre of your chart.

Get stitching! Make your first stitch. Leave a thread tail of 4cm (2in) on the back of the fabric, and catch it under your stitches to secure it. We recommend finishing all the cross stitch in your design before you work the backstitch or add any French knots. Have a look at the diagrams opposite to see how to tackle all of these stitches.

Needles Tapestry needles are blunt-ended so that they can pass easily between the threads of the aida and evenweave. They come in various thicknesses, which are suitable for certain fabrics. Refer to the chart on the right to work out which needle to choose. When stitching fractionals on aida (see far right), a sharp-ended embroidery needle can be used to split the fabric blocks.

Fractional stitches Fractionals allow you to create round edges Quarter

How to stitch with our charts

The chart shows which corner the fractional stitch occupies. Bring the needle up in that corner and take it down in the centre of the square, halfway across the diagonal (diagram 1).

Our charts make it easy to see the different stitches in our designs… Cross stitch

Backstitch

Bring your needle up at the bottom left corner and down in the top right. Then bring it up in the bottom right corner and down in the top left.

Use to add detail to a design. Bring your needle up at (1), down at (2), up at (3), back down at (1) and so on, following the line of backstitch on the chart. 3 2

4

Three-quarters

10

Following on from the quarter stitch, make a half stitch across the other diagonal of the square, from corner to corner (diagram 2). Take care because three-quarter stitches can face in any direction.

French knots Bring the needle up through the fabric. Holding the thread taut in one hand, wrap the needle around the thread twice. Still keeping the thread taut, push the needle back down into the fabric, close to where it came out. Pull gently until a knot forms.

Two symbols When two symbols share a square, work a fractional in each colour – a three-quarter stitch in the main colour and a quarter stitch in the background colour (diagram 3). 4

3

How to read our keys Large symbols and clear information make our keys easy to use…

Number of strands These rows tell you what stitch you need to work and in how many strands.

The symbols Starting at the centre of your chart, find an area marked with a particular symbol. Next, find the corresponding symbol on the key. Move across the columns to the right of the symbol, to find out which thread you need to stitch this area.

Backstitch and French knots Backstitch and French knots are listed under the cross stitch. The amount of thread you need to work these often varies, so make sure you check how many strands of thread are specified in the key.

These are the three main thread manufacturers. The columns below the headings list the thread codes you’ll need to stitch your design. For best results, stick to one manufacturer for the whole of a design.

Back-to-back If you want to draw a strong outline, work a three-quarter stitch in each colour and stitch them back-to-back. Make sure that the two half stitches lie neatly parallel to each other.
