Whenever you run short of money, you borrow from your friends or from the bank. What will you do if you run short of time? You can neither borrow nor buy time. Many people do not plan how to spend their time. They spend hours in vain. Try, after every hour, to jot down everything you do. At night, make a total and you will be surprised to see how much time you have spent in vain. In this computer age, you cannot afford to waste your time. A farmer had a faithful servant. He had worked hard for him for three years without having been paid any wages. At last the man decided not to work without pay. He went to his master and asked for money. The farmer was a great miser. So he took out of his purse three hundred dollars and gave him hundred dollars for every year’s service. The poor servant thought that it was a great deal of money to have. Taking the money, he went off singing and dancing.
Any work done out of compulsion cannot keep us happy for long. But we derive pleasure from a hobby. There are different kinds of hobbies. Some people like to collect old and odd things. Others like to collect paintings, books etc. Fiji is a small group of islands. Beautiful beaches are found all around. Fijians are fond of swimming. Swimming is a favourite hobby for many Fijians. Swimming is, at the same time, a good exercise. Some people spend hours in the sea.
This is an age of advertisement. Sometimes the best products remain unknown to the public because of lack of advertisement. Many effective medicines gain no popularity because nobody knows about them. On the other hand, there are many such medicines which are not so effective, but they are very popular because they are advertised far and wide. Advertisement is the only means of selling your goods quickly and in large quantity. My father had never had much education but he wanted all his children to study well. He sacrificed a lot for the education and welfare of his children. He was not a harsh father but was very strict about attending school. One day, my younger brother played truant. The next day, my brother was sent to work in the field. After a whole day of work, he came back home tired. He had pain all over the body. He started crying and promised not to play truant again.
Fiji is also the land of the ‘Ramayana’. In every settlement, there are many people whose name starts or ends with the word ‘Ram’. During the Girmit days, Tulsidas’s Ramcharitmanas was the principal source of 115
inspiration, devotion and entertainment. Our forefathers were influenced by the teachings of Tulsidas. They are very often quoted by the pundits to give force to their lecture. Ramcharitmanas is still playing an important role in the lives of people in Fiji.
Tulsi is a very popular herb. People regard it with faith and devotion. Hindus offer its leaves to God as ‘prasad’. It is used to cure many diseases. Tulsi emits a particular smell that purifies the atmosphere. In Fiji, almost every Hindu family grows a tulsi plant in his yard. It is planted in a clean place. Every morning, water is poured with devotion on the plant. It does not grow where it is not looked after properly.
One day Prince Siddharta quietly went out of the palace. He saw many strange things. He saw a person who was sick and was crying with pain. The prince also saw an old man who was almost blind on account of his old age. He could not walk properly. Last, a dead body appeared before him. It was a poor baby who died and his mother was weeping loudly. The Prince felt bad when he knew that all men had to suffer these troubles.
Marica arrives before Sita in the form of a beautiful deer. She asks Rama to slay it and bring her its skin. Rama draws his arrow and goes out to get it. He instructs Lakshmana to take care of Sita in the lonely woods. Rama fires his arrow to kill the deer. The latter falls to the ground crying and calling the name of Lakshmana, Sita hears the cry of woe. She becomes overwhelmed with fear. She thinks that Rama has been killed. In her anxiety, she sends Lakshmana to see what has happened to Rama.
The poems of Surdas about Lord Krishna’s childhood activities are important. The subject matter and the devotional feelings of these poems are outstanding. The subjects of these poems are mainly (i) the birth of Krishna (ii) stealing butter (iii) grazing the cows and (iv) stealing the clothes of the girls of Braj. In Fiji various activities are organised to celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna. There is tremendous rejoicing throughout the country.
